Nutrition labelling requirements in Brazil
Packaged food sold in Brazil must carry a nutrition declaration under ANVISA RDC nº 243/2018; IN nº 28/2018; %VD per RDC nº 269/2005 (IDR, adults). This page covers the Brazil - Suplemento Alimentar (ANVISA) format: Per daily dose with %VD - RDC 243/2018, IN 28/2018. A supplement panel lists whatever the product contains rather than a fixed set, but 25 nutrients have a published reference intake, values are declared por dose diária and alongside a % VD* column. 3 statements are mandatory on pack, including "Este produto não é um medicamento.". The panel carries the footnote "* Percentual de valores diários (RDC nº 269/2005) para adultos.". The panel is headed "Suplemento Alimentar". NFL builds a print-ready Brazilian nutrition label from your recipe, applying the rounding rules and reference intakes for Brazil automatically, and exports it as PDF, PNG, SVG, JPG or EPS.

Key facts
Brazil food supplement labelling under ANVISA RDC 243/2018
Brazil's food supplement rules are in force under ANVISA's RDC 243/2018 and IN 28/2018. They cover products for oral use, in pharmaceutical forms such as capsules, tablets or powders, that supplement the diet of healthy people with nutrients, bioactive substances, enzymes or probiotics.
The designation "SUPLEMENTO ALIMENTAR" followed by the pharmaceutical form is mandatory, placed next to the brand name in upper case, bold and contrasting type. The label must also give a recommendation for use naming the population group (with the age range for children) and the amount and frequency of use for each group.
Three warnings are mandatory and must be in bold:
- "Este produto não é um medicamento";
- "Não exceder a recomendação diária de consumo indicada na embalagem"; and
- "Mantenha fora do alcance de crianças".
Storage instructions, including after opening where relevant, are also mandatory, as are the species of each probiotic strain in the ingredient list and any extra warnings set for specific ingredients in IN 28/2018.

Nutrition table and %VD on a suplemento alimentar
A nutrition information table is mandatory under RDC 429/2020 and IN 75/2020, in force. For supplements, the serving declared is the daily amount recommended by the manufacturer for each population group on the label, not a per 100 g or per 100 ml basis. RDC 429/2020 specifically excludes supplements from the per 100 g or 100 ml column.
The table must declare energy and every nutrient, bioactive substance and enzyme added to the product. The %VD is calculated from the reference values for each population group named on the label; where no reference value exists, the %VD space stays blank.
For products recommended for more than one population group, the aggregate table format is allowed so that each group's values can be shown. The table follows the standard models, with black characters and lines on a white background.

Allowed claims under IN 28/2018
Functional and health claims on Brazilian supplements are limited to those authorized in Annex V of IN 28/2018, each with its own conditions of use, which are mandatory. ANVISA updates the IN 28 lists regularly, so the current consolidated version must be checked for the ingredient, target population, claim wording and conditions before artwork is finalized.
Using an authorized claim is generally voluntary, but RDC 243/2018 makes certain claims mandatory for supplements containing probiotics or enzymes. Claim wording cannot be varied, apart from the limited combinations RDC 243/2018 allows.
Labels must not suggest medicinal or therapeutic purposes, imply that ordinary foods cannot supply the nutrients needed for health, or claim the supplement is comparable or superior to conventional foods. These prohibitions are in force.

Importing supplements into Brazil and ANVISA notification
Mandatory label information must be in Portuguese under RDC 727/2022, the general labelling rule for packaged foods. If the original pack is not in Portuguese, a complementary label can be applied at origin or in Brazil before sale, and the label must identify the responsible businesses, including the importer where applicable.
Food supplements must be notified to ANVISA before they are placed on the market, under RDC 843/2024 and IN 281/2024, which is mandatory. The label of a notified product carries the statement "Alimento notificado na Anvisa:" followed by the full notification process number.
So an imported supplement usually needs more than a translation: the "SUPLEMENTO ALIMENTAR" designation, the three warnings, a nutrition table per daily recommendation with %VD, claims limited to IN 28 wording, Portuguese general information, importer details and the notification number.
