Nutrition labelling requirements in Nepal
Packaged food sold in Nepal must carry a nutrition declaration under Food Regulations 1970 + DFTQC Labelling Guidance (Codex-aligned). This page covers the Nepal - DFTQC (Codex-aligned) format: Nepali (Devanagari) + English per Food Regulations 1970. A compliant Nepali nutrition label declares 6 mandatory nutrients: शक्ति / energy, प्रोटिन / protein, बोसो / fat, कार्बोहाइड्रेट / carbohydrate, चिनी / sugars and सोडियम / sodium. Values are declared per 100 g or 100 ml, with energy in kcal, and sodium rather than salt. The panel is headed "पोषण जानकारी / Nutrition Information". Nepali and English must both appear on pack. There is no mandatory front-of-pack warning scheme. NFL builds a print-ready Nepali nutrition label from your recipe, applying the rounding rules and reference intakes for Nepal automatically, and exports it as PDF, PNG, SVG, JPG or EPS.

Key facts
Nepal food labelling requirements for prepacked food
Nepal's main food law is now the Food Safety and Quality Act, 2081, which the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control (DFTQC) says took effect on 2081/04/19 B.S. (August 2024), replacing the Food Act, 2023 B.S. The Food Regulation, 2027 B.S. (1970) is still published by DFTQC and the Ministry of Law as a prevailing regulation and holds the detailed packed-food label rules.
A label is mandatory on packed food before sale. The mandatory particulars include:
- a clear name or description of the food;
- name and address of the business that packed or labelled it;
- ingredients of a mixed food;
- net weight or measure;
- batch number, production date and expiry or consumption date; and
- declarations of permitted colours or preservatives where used.
Labels must not mislead. Food containing a preservative cannot be called "pure" or similar terms such as "chokho", "bisuddha" or "sudda".

Nepal food label language requirements
Under the 2081 Act, mandatory label information on imported and exported food must be in Nepali or English, and other languages may be added. For food made and sold in Nepal, the Act requires understandable labelling and gives priority to Nepali.
The Food Regulation also allows its particulars in Nepali or English. Nepali is written in Devanagari script.

Nepal nutrition label requirements
Official sources do not show a full nutrition panel as mandatory on every prepacked food. Under the 2081 Act, nutrient quantities are mandatory for foods prescribed for nutrition declaration, so it depends on the food category or standard.
Under the Food Regulation, a food may not claim vitamins, minerals or other nutrients unless the label states the claimed nutrient and its quantity in the prescribed units. The same applies to advertising.
The Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology publishes NS 94, Pre-packed Food Labeling, but its technical text is not public, so no extra nutrient rules are drawn from it here.

Nepal imported food labelling and enforcement
Imported food must meet Nepal's labelling law. Under the 2081 Act, the importer must provide the required particulars in Nepali or English, and food without the required label cannot be imported or sold. Imported vegetables and fruit also need a packaging label, even though loose produce is otherwise exempt.
The Act's particulars include composition, weight or volume, selling price, batch, production date, consumption period where relevant, required warnings, and nutrient quantities for prescribed foods.
DFTQC runs food permits, monitoring, inspection and import or export control, and its enforcement notices show that missing or incomplete labels lead to action.
