Nutrition labelling requirements in Laos
Packaged food sold in Laos must carry a nutrition declaration under Law on Food No. 04/NA (2013) - FDD MOH / Codex-aligned. This page covers the Laos - FDD MOH (Law on Food 2013) format: Lao Codex baseline via Food and Drug Department. A compliant Lao nutrition label declares 7 mandatory nutrients: energy, protein, fat, saturated fat, carbohydrate, total sugars and sodium. Values are declared per 100 g or 100 ml, with energy in both kcal and kJ, and sodium rather than salt. The panel is headed "Nutrition Information". Lao is required on pack. There is no mandatory front-of-pack warning scheme. NFL builds a print-ready Lao nutrition label from your recipe, applying the rounding rules and reference intakes for Laos automatically, and exports it as PDF, PNG, SVG, JPG or EPS.

Key facts
Laos food labelling requirements and legal framework
Food safety in Lao PDR is managed by the Ministry of Health under the Law on Food (Amended) No. 33/NA of 24 July 2013, which is in force. Food made, imported, exported or sold in Laos must meet Lao food standards, and where no Lao standard exists, the relevant Codex standard applies, which is mandatory.
The Law makes labelling mandatory for food distributed, sold, served, imported, exported or donated in Laos, and requires labels to give detailed and correct information. Detailed rules are in separate regulations, including the Ministry of Health's Decision on Labelling for Food Product No. 519/MOH of 18 March 2009, which the official Lao Trade Portal lists as in force.

Laos food label language requirements
The Food Law allows labelling in Lao and/or a major international language. More specific rules for packaged products go further and make Lao-language information mandatory for packaged products made, imported and sold in Laos. For retail packaged food, treat Lao as required.
Under Decision No. 1572/DSM.MOST of 27 November 2020 on packaging management, label information must be clear, readable, understandable and hard to erase, and any foreign-language text must match the Lao text. Mandatory particulars for packaged products include, where they apply:
- product name;
- responsible business name and address;
- quantity or net content;
- manufacturing and expiry information;
- instructions and storage information;
- ingredients; and
- warnings.
Laos imported food labelling and local labels
The Lao Trade Portal lists a mandatory labelling requirement for imported food, based on the Food Law, Decision 519/MOH and the current import, export and transit decision. Imported food also needs Ministry of Health import permission and goes through the Food and Drug Department's control and border procedures, under Decision No. 3091/MOH of 25 September 2024.
The Ministry of Industry and Commerce's Ordinance No. 2501/MOIC.DTD of 16 December 2015 on labelling in Lao language requires imported consumer products to carry Lao information before distribution, with separate treatment for transit or re-export goods.

Laos nutrition label requirements
Official Lao sources do not confirm a universal nutrition panel for every prepackaged food. The Food Law gives consumers a right to correct information on nutritious ingredients, safety, quality and storage, and makes Lao standards, or Codex where none exist, mandatory.
Where a product standard or the applicable Codex standard requires nutrition information, it must be given. Check the standard for your product rather than assuming no nutrition information is needed.
