Nutrition labelling requirements in the Maldives

Packaged food sold in the Maldives must carry a nutrition declaration under MFDA Food Labelling Regulation 2019/R-1010 (Codex-aligned). This page covers the Maldives - MFDA 2019/R-1010 format: Dhivehi (Thaana, RTL) + English per Food Act 4/2019. A compliant Maldivian nutrition label declares 7 mandatory nutrients: ހަކަތަ / energy, ޕްރޮޓީން / protein, ފެޓް / fat, ސެޗުރޭޓަޑް ފެޓް / sat. fat, ކާބޯހައިޑްރޭޓް / carbohydrate, ހަކުރު / sugars and ސޯޑިއަމް / sodium. Values are declared per 100 g or 100 ml, with energy in kcal, and sodium rather than salt. The panel is headed "ކާނާގެ މައުލޫމާތު / Nutrition Information". Dhivehi and English must both appear on pack. There is no mandatory front-of-pack warning scheme. NFL builds a print-ready Maldivian nutrition label from your recipe, applying the rounding rules and reference intakes for the Maldives automatically, and exports it as PDF, PNG, SVG, JPG or EPS.

Maldives food labelling requirements under the 2026 MFDA regulation

The Maldives replaced its food labelling rules in 2026. The Food Packaging and Labelling Regulation, Regulation No. 2026/R-52, made under the Food Safety Act (Act No. 6/2024), took effect on publication in the Government Gazette on 9 June 2026. The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) enforces it.

It repealed the older National Standard for Labelling Prepackaged Food, MFDA-FCD STAN 4-2014 (Rev. 1-2016). Products already packed and labelled when the regulation started had a transitional six-month period to comply.

Regulation No. 2019/R-1010, sometimes cited for food labels, is a gazetted regulation on construction-sector professionals, not food.

Mandatory information on a Maldives food label

Under Schedule 1, these are mandatory on prepackaged food where they apply, unless a specific standard says otherwise:

  • the true name of the food, not misleading;
  • an ingredient list for multi-ingredient foods, following the rules on compound ingredients, allergens, additives and emphasised ingredients;
  • net contents in SI units, by volume for liquids and weight for solids;
  • drained weight for food packed in liquid;
  • name and address of the manufacturer, packer or importer;
  • country of origin where leaving it out would mislead;
  • lot identification and date marking;
  • storage conditions needed for the date to hold; and
  • instructions for use where needed.

Irradiated foods need a treatment statement; the international irradiation symbol is voluntary.

Maldives food label language requirements

For retail prepackaged food, labelling in either Dhivehi or English is mandatory. Both are not required. Dhivehi is written in Thaana script, right to left.

Labels must be clear, legible, fixed so they cannot come off, and readable through any outer wrapper. Non-retail containers follow a separate Schedule 2, where certain statements, such as marking the pack as not for retail sale, may be in Dhivehi or English.

Maldives nutrition label and imported food labelling

The general provisions of Regulation 2026/R-52 do not make a nutrition panel mandatory on every ordinary prepackaged food. Product-specific rules may add nutrition information for particular categories.

The regulation expressly applies Schedule 1 to food imported into the Maldives as well as food made locally for retail sale, so imported packs must comply. New artwork should be prepared against 2026/R-52, not the repealed 2014 standard.
