Nutrition labelling requirements in Egypt

Packaged food sold in Egypt must carry a nutrition declaration under ES 1523/2019 (EOS). This page covers the Egypt - ES 1523/2019 (Arabic/English) format: Bilingual per Egyptian Organization for Standardization. A compliant Egyptian nutrition label declares 5 mandatory nutrients: energy (السعرات), protein (البروتين), fat (الدهون), carbs (الكربوهيدرات) and sodium (الصوديوم). Values are declared per 100 g or 100 ml and per serving, both columns required, with energy in kcal, and sodium rather than salt. The panel is headed "المعلومات الغذائية / Nutrition Information". Arabic is required on pack. There is no mandatory front-of-pack warning scheme. NFL builds a print-ready Egyptian nutrition label from your recipe, applying the rounding rules and reference intakes for Egypt automatically, and exports it as PDF, PNG, SVG, JPG or EPS.

Egypt food labelling requirements and the Egyptian standard

Egypt's general standard for labelling prepackaged foods is ES 1546, published by the Egyptian Organization for Standardization and Quality (EOS). The current edition, ES 1546/2024, is a full revision based on the Codex General Standard for the Labelling of Prepackaged Foods, and covers the information on prepackaged foods offered to consumers or for catering.

The EOS catalogue lists ES 1546/2024 as "not obligatory", so as a standard it is voluntary on its own. Its requirements become mandatory where a binding law, ministerial decree, National Food Safety Authority (NFSA) decision or product-specific mandatory standard makes them so, which is common for many food categories.

In practice, food businesses check three layers for each product: the general Codex-based standard, the mandatory product standard for that food, and any NFSA or import rules.

Nutrition labelling in Egypt

A blanket mandatory nutrition declaration for every prepackaged food is not set out in the publicly available text of the general standard. Nutrition information can still be mandatory where a mandatory product standard, an NFSA rule, or a nutrition or health claim requires it.

Where a nutrition declaration is given, Egypt follows the Codex model on which ES 1546 is based, so energy, protein, carbohydrate, fat and sodium are the usual core items, with any nutrient named in a claim added.

Because requirements vary by category, the applicable product standard should be checked before artwork is finalized. EOS standards are sold rather than published in full, so the official purchased text is the reliable reference.

Arabic language and imported food labels

Arabic is required for key label information in Egypt. US government trade guidance on Egypt notes that production and expiry dates must be shown clearly in Arabic on the package, and the Executive Regulation of the Import and Export Law makes Arabic mandatory for specified information on certain imported foods, such as imported poultry and meat.

Importers should not plan on fixing labels in Egypt. The same trade guidance states that importers are not permitted to affix printed labels to products after import, so compliant Arabic information needs to be on the pack before shipment.

Imports also go through the import inspection system run by the General Organization for Export and Import Control (GOEIC), which checks conformity with the applicable Egyptian standards.

Who regulates food labelling in Egypt

The National Food Safety Authority (NFSA) is Egypt's food safety regulator. It runs the registration and control of food establishments and sets or recommends changes to food standards based on risk assessment.

EOS develops and publishes Egyptian standards, including ES 1546 on labelling, through its technical committee for food packing, packaging and labelling.

GOEIC handles inspection of imported goods at the border. A compliant label for Egypt has to satisfy NFSA rules, the relevant Egyptian standards and GOEIC import checks together.
