Nutrition labelling requirements in Kosovo

Packaged food sold in Kosovo must carry a nutrition declaration under Law No. 03/L-016 on Food - AUV, EU 1169/2011-aligned. This page covers the Kosovo - AUV (EU 1169-aligned) format: Albanian/Serbian EU-style nutrition declaration. A compliant Kosovo nutrition label declares 7 mandatory nutrients: energy, protein, fat, saturated fat, carbohydrate, total sugars and sodium. Values are declared per 100 g or 100 ml, with energy in both kcal and kJ, and sodium rather than salt. The panel is headed "Vlera ushqyese / Nutrition declaration". Albanian and Serbian must both appear on pack. There is no mandatory front-of-pack warning scheme. NFL builds a print-ready Kosovo nutrition label from your recipe, applying the rounding rules and reference intakes for Kosovo automatically, and exports it as PDF, PNG, SVG, JPG or EPS.

Kosovo food labelling requirements and responsible authority

Kosovo's Food Law, Law No. 08/L-120, requires food for the Kosovo market to carry the information consumers need, which is mandatory, and links labelling to consumer protection law.

The Food and Veterinary Agency (AUV) carries out official controls. It says the Government has delegated to it control of food safety, hygiene, traceability and labelling from processing to retail, under national and EU-harmonised legislation.

Under the Law on Consumer Protection, No. 06/L-034, packaged goods must show the producer, product name, quantity, composition and other relevant information, unless more specific rules apply. Information must not mislead.

Kosovo nutrition label and EU 1169 alignment

Kosovo is not an EU member, and Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 is not automatically binding there. The current Food Law does not itself set out the EU nutrient list, and the earlier labelling regulation, MTI Regulation No. 09/2013, has been repealed.

The EU model is the reference AUV works toward. Under it, the declaration covers energy, fat, saturates, carbohydrate, sugars, protein and salt per 100 g or 100 ml. A full panel is not confirmed as universally mandatory in Kosovo unless a Kosovo implementing or product rule requires it, so check current Kosovo rules before relying on the EU format.

Kosovo food label language requirements

The consumer protection law requires labels to be clear, visible and readable in the official languages, and translations must match the original information.

Albanian and Serbian are Kosovo's official languages with equal status under the Law on the Use of Languages (No. 02/L-37). Other community languages can have official status in some municipalities. Additional languages are voluntary but cannot replace the official-language information.

Kosovo imported food labelling requirements

For imported goods, the consumer protection law requires the importer's name and address and the producer's country of origin, unless more specific rules apply. The information must be in the official languages.

Importers are responsible for providing Kosovo-compliant information rather than relying on the foreign label. AUV's controls cover distribution, wholesale and retail, so imported foods are checked like local ones once on sale.
